I was visiting with a friend who recently lost her mother and is in a deep well of grief. We talked about what she most needed right now. Upon reflection, she realized that she’s receiving a lot of offers for support (massages, meals, help with childcare, a grief support group and more) but she is struggling to accept this help and believe she is worthy of support.
January was a brutal month for me and I really struggled with stabilizing my mood. When I was in this dark space, I found it incredibly hard to reach out for AND to receive help. I resisted support. I felt stuck and couldn’t see a way out.
Finally, one afternoon I MADE myself go out and walk with a close friend in the forest. It turned out nature, connection and being able to show up “warts and all,” was exactly the medicine I needed. And I finally shifted.
This week, I offer the Live Inside Out question I’m sitting with and invite you to join me (watch a 2 min. video):
Want more? Read about the science of asking for and receiving help and why it’s key to resiliency and well-being. This week I challenge you to reach out and ask for help around an issue or challenge (on the home or work front). Or, take a friend up on an offer for support. Receiving help is not only good for our mental health and well-being–it’s a gift to model this for others. One pebble in the pond can create far-reaching and long-lasting effects.
